Long & McQuade

Long & McQuade Limited began in 1956 when Jack Long became a dealer for King Band Instruments. He set up a small store on Carlton Street in Toronto on the second floor of an old house which had been divided into music studios, and taught trumpet lessons on the side. About six months later he acquired a partner, Jack McQuade, who was teaching drum lessons in one of the young company’s two small studios.

The original storefront was opened the following year on Yonge Street at Yorkville Avenue. It was during these early days that Yorkville Sound was created — when Peter Traynor began building speaker cabinets and then amplifiers on the second floor of the store, to meet a growing need for amplifiers and PA systems in the budding rock and roll industry.

Many of the existing Long & McQuade customer service policies sprang from the store’s early days: the rental program began because many of the partners’ friends kept asking to borrow instruments; in-house financing developed out of what was originally a casual arrangement to sell equipment and spread out the payments to make it easier for the customer. Over the years, Long & McQuade has grown to a company which employs over 1000 people throughout 52 locations.

Long & McQuade is the Official Backline supplier for the 2011 PEAK Performance Project.

Nimbus School of Recording Arts

The Nimbus name is a tribute… … to the famous production company Nimbus 9 and its co-founder Jack Richardson.
Jack is a Juno Award-winning record producer, an Order of Canada recipient, is in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, and is considered the “Grandfather” of the Canadian music business. The Juno Award for Producer of the Year has been named in his honour as of 2002.

Allan Macmillan, Peter Clayton, Jack Richardson, Bob Ezrin and Ben McPeek revolutionized music production and built and operated one of the most respected studios in North America (Soundstage).

They also helped to define the art of teaching the craft of recording and production in the early 70’s. Nimbus was known as the gold standard training ground for professionals in the field and spawned numerous highly successful producers, engineers and music executives.

The Nimbus School of Recording Arts will be overseeing the recording studios and process at the 2011 PEAK Performance Project Boot Camp. They have also donated a grand prize of one free day of studio time with Shaun Cole and Garth Richardson to the PEAK Top 20 artist that wins the Vancouver 125 Songwriting Competition.

Vancouver 125

Vancouver’s 125th anniversary and year as Cultural Capital of Canada will be celebrated throughout 2011 with Vancouver 125: a year-long program of anniversary initiatives and events.

Two major events in honour of Vancouver’s 125th anniversary are planned for the spring and summer. Birthday Live will celebrate the city’s 125th birthday on April 6, 2011 with a free party at Jack Poole Plaza (pictured above). Summer Live will showcase Vancouver’s vibrant arts scene through a free, multi-stage celebration in Stanley Park on July 8, 9, 10, 2011.

In addition to the Birthday Live and Summer Live events, Vancouver 125 is supporting the work of dozens of cultural organizations who will present events, exhibitions, festivals and other artistic projects throughout the anniversary year. Vancouver 125 also includes community events and civic initiatives that bring opportunities to explore Vancouver’s history, diversity and innovative cultural scene in neighborhoods across the city.

Vancouver 125 is a major sponsor of the 2011 PEAK Performance Project and has also empowered the Top 20 Artists to write a song about Vancouver’s 125th Anniversary for the Vancouver 125 Songwriting Competition.

Band Merch Canada

Band Merch Canada was conceived to act as a central networking hub for musicians, artists, designers, producers and engineers working in the Canadian music industry. Although the core base of the company remains providing quality merchandise, graphic design, and production services for some of Canada`s hottest up-and-coming musicians, it has become apparent that there needs to be some profound changes made to the music industry at large in terms of how people interact with each other. Because there have been extreme shifts within every facet of the music industry that have rendered traditional business models obsolete, Band Merch feels that the old model of business interaction has ceased to be relevant and meaningful, and that there desperately needs to be some shifts in how we construct and deconstruct the relationship between commerce and art. They are interested in designing and developing meaningful, long-term relationships between all of the various constituent elements of the Canadian music industry that are based on value-motivated (as opposed to profit-motivated) interactions that are inherently non-exploitative and beneficial for everyone involved.

Band Merch Canada is the Official Merch Supplier of the 2011 PEAK Performance Project and they will also be taking part in the PEAK Perk program at Boot Camp.
